Introduction to Drilling Rigs
A drilling rig is a machine that drills holes in the earth's surface to create wells. They can be used to drill oil, water, or natural gas wells, or to create holes for construction. The drilling rigs can be very big structures that hold equipment that is used to make water wells, natural gas extraction wells, or oil wells.
There are many different types of drilling rigs. The drilling rig that is used is dependent on the specific requirements needed for the drilling site. Here are a few different kinds of drilling rigs.
Drilling rigs come in three sizes: singles, doubles, and triples. The size refers to the number of pipe lengths that can fit in the rig's derrick. A single rig has one length of pipe, a double rig has two, and a triple rig has three.
Oil drilling rigs can drill thousands of feet into the earth's crust, while water well drilling rigs can only drill hundreds of feet. Both types of rigs use a hoisting unit to lift and lower a string of pipe into a vertical hole.
Types of Drilling Rigs
DTH Drilling Rig
A DTH drilling rig is a percussive rotary drilling rig. Its internal structure is different from general rock drilling rigs. Its gas distribution and piston reciprocating mechanism are independent. The front end is directly connected to the drill bit, and the back end is connected to the drill rod. When rock drilling, the impactor dives into the hole, and the piston (hammer) in the impactor reciprocates to strike the shank through the gas distribution device (valve) so that the drill bit impacts the rock at the bottom of the hole. The high-speed rotation of the impactor in the hole is realized by a motor or a wind-driven rotating device outside the hole through a drill rod connected to the rear end of the impactor. The cuttings produced during the rock drilling process are flushed out of the hole by a mixture of wind and water. The mixed gas is injected into the impactor through the center of the drill rod by the powder discharge mechanism, and then enters the bottom of the hole through the air groove on the impactor cylinder.
Surface Core Drilling Rig
A surface core drilling rig is a machine used to create boreholes in the earth's crust. This machine is so called since the rig itself is located, and remains stationary, at the ground level while the drill itself penetrates the earth's surface. Surface core drilling rigs can be used in a multitude of applications including drilling of water, oil, and natural gas extraction wells, extraction of mineral deposits, geological testing, and installation of subsurface utilities. A surface core drilling rig is also simply referred to as a drilling rig.
Surface Core Drilling Rig are essential in horizontal directional drilling operations. They are typically used to drill pilot holes, perform back-reaming, and install subsurface pipes, conduits, and ducts. The rig itself consists of a structural frame, an engine, hydraulic systems, and a pumping system. In directional drilling, these rigs are mobile and are usually mounted on trucks, tracks, or trailers.
Water Well Drilling Rig
A water well drilling rig is a specialized piece of equipment used to drill boreholes or wells into the ground to access underground water sources, such as aquifers. These drilling rigs come in various sizes and configurations, depending on the specific requirements of the drilling project, such as depth, soil type, and environmental conditions.
The primary purpose of a water well drilling rig is to penetrate the earth's surface and create a hole (called a borehole or well) that allows the extraction of water for various uses, including drinking, irrigation, industrial processes, and more. The drilling process involves the use of a drill bit attached to a drill string, which is rotated and forced into the ground by the drilling rig's machinery. As the drill bit penetrates the ground, it breaks up and removes soil, rock, and other materials, creating a hole.
Rotary Drilling Rig
The rotary drilling rig is also called a rotary drilling machine or pile driver. The rotary drilling rig is a comprehensive drilling rig, which can use a variety of bottom layers, and has the characteristics of fast hole formation, less pollution, and strong maneuverability. Short auger drills can be used for dry excavation, and rotary drills can also be used for wet excavation with mud protection. The rotary excavator can be used with the hammer to drill and break the hard soil and then carry out digging operations. If it is matched with an enlarged head drill, the hole can be reamed at the bottom of the hole. Rotary excavator adopts a multi-layer telescopic drill pipe, which has less auxiliary time for drilling, low labor intensity, and does not require mud circulation to discharge cuttings, which saves costs. It is especially suitable for the basic construction of urban construction.
Rotary Drilling Rig is mainly suitable for sandy soil, cohesive soil, silty soil, fill layer, and silt layer, some of which contain pebbles, gravel, and strong weathering materials. Rock strata are used for housing construction, high-speed rail catenary support, slope protection piles, urban construction, civil construction, new rural development, power grid transformation, landscaping, and other engineering projects, used in filling piles, continuous walls, foundation reinforcement, etc. The foundation is under construction.
Advantages of Drilling Rigs
We are adopting a folding mast structure, simple and delicate structure, good durability, excellent stability of the whole machine, saving on cost, and making maintenance more convenient.
The upper guide frame structure is adopted to ensure the verticality of the drill rod and the ground, making the construction more convenient, improving construction efficiency, and increasing safety.
The powerhead has a reasonable structure design, reliable lubrication, strong power, and cost-saving, and it is not easy to damage and is easy to maintain.
Main winch: The original imported hydraulic motor is used, which is sensitive and can be used freely. The lifting speed can reach 82m/min, greatly improving construction efficiency. The main winch is placed on the right front of the operator enabling the observer to observe the working status of the main winch at any time, and avoid rope disorder caused by other factors.
Increased Flexibility: The lightweight modular design makes the drilling rigs easy to install and relocate, thereby allowing greater operational flexibility for adaptation to different job sites.
Higher Automation: Drilling Rigs are fully self-propelled hydraulic drilling rigs; some are equipped with computer operating systems. They have many advanced automatic features that allow a high level of flexibility in operations and increased productivity.
Faster Drilling: Drilling Rigs can be configured with different drill bits according to stratum. The long drilling tube is suitable for working in clay soil to speed up drilling. The short drilling tube is suitable in strata containing sand and cobble for better control of drilling speed.
High Operational Efficiency: Drilling Rigs use drilling muds to lubricate, cool and clean the drilling bit, control down hole pressures, stabilize the hole wall and remove drill cuttings, thus allowing better penetration rates and higher operational efficiency.
How to use DTH Drilling Rig?
DTH Drilling Rig installation and preparation:
- Prepare the rock-drilling cavern; the specifications of which can be determined according to the method of drilling. Generally speaking, the height of the cavity is 2.6-2.8 meters when drilling a horizontal hole with a down-the-hole drill. When drilling upward, downward, or inclined holes, the width of the cavity is 2.5 meters, and the height is 2.8-3 meters.
- Lead the gas and water pipelines, lighting lines, etc., to near the working surface for later use.
- Erect the pillars firmly according to the requirements of the hole position design. The upper and lower ends of the pillar should be padded with wooden boards, and the horizontal shaft and the snap ring are installed on the pillar according to a certain height and direction. Use the hand winch to lift the machine and fix it on the pillar at the required angle. Then adjust the hole direction of the drill.
Pre-work inspection
- When starting to work, carefully check whether the gas and water pipelines are firmly connected. Check for air leaks and water leaks.
- Check whether the lubricator has been filled with oil.
- Check whether the screws, nuts, joints of each part have been tightened. Check whether the column is strong.
Drilling procedure
When opening the hole, start the motor first, and pull the push handle of the manipulator after the transfer is normal. Make it get proper propulsion, and then pull the handle that controls the impactor into the working position. After rock drilling, you can open the water valve to keep the gas-water mixture in a proper ratio. Perform normal rock drilling work. When the advancing work moves the rod loader to collide with the brace holder, it is time to finish drilling a drill rod. It is necessary to stop the operation of the motor and stop the air and water supply to the impactor. Insert the fork into the drill pipe slot of the drill holder, make the motor reverse the slide plate to retreat, and disconnect the joint from the drill pipe. Then connect the second drill pipe, press this button and you will continue to work in a cycle.
Maintenance Tips for Drilling Rigs
Inspect regularly:
The first step to maintaining a drilling rig is to inspect it regularly. You should check all the components of the rig, such as the drill pipe, the drill bit, the mud pump, the blowout preventer, and the rig floor. You should also look for signs of wear and tear, corrosion, leaks, cracks, or damage. You should document any issues and report them to the rig manager or supervisor. Regular inspections can help you identify and fix problems before they become serious.
Clean thoroughly:
The second step to maintaining a drilling rig is to clean it thoroughly. You should remove any dirt, mud, oil, grease, or debris from the rig and its parts. You should also use appropriate cleaning agents and tools to sanitize the rig and prevent contamination. Cleaning the rig can help you improve its performance, extend its lifespan, and prevent health and environmental hazards.
Lubricate properly:
The third step to maintaining a drilling rig is to lubricate it properly. You should apply the right amount and type of lubricant to the moving parts of the rig, such as the bearings, gears, chains, and valves. You should also follow the manufacturer's recommendations and specifications for lubrication. Lubricating the rig can help you reduce friction, heat, and wear and tear. It can also prevent rust and corrosion.
Repair promptly:
The fourth step to maintaining a drilling rig is to repair it promptly. You should not ignore or delay any repairs that are needed on the rig. You should also use qualified and experienced technicians to perform the repairs. You should also replace any parts that are broken or worn out. Repairing the rig promptly can help you avoid downtime, accidents, and further damage.
Train adequately:
The fifth step to maintaining a drilling rig is to train adequately. You should ensure that all the personnel who work on or around the rig are properly trained and certified. You should also provide them with regular refresher courses and updates on the latest safety and maintenance standards. Training the personnel adequately can help you ensure that they operate the rig safely and efficiently.
Monitor constantly:
The sixth and final step to maintaining a drilling rig is to monitor it constantly. You should use sensors, gauges, cameras, and software to track the performance and condition of the rig. You should also collect and analyze data on the rig's operations, such as the drilling speed, pressure, temperature, and depth. Monitoring the rig constantly can help you optimize its productivity, detect any anomalies, and make adjustments as needed.
Protect the machines:
It may seem counter-intuitive for rule #1 be about the protection of machines instead of humans.
But the truth of living and working on an oil rig hundreds of miles from the nearest trace of human civilization, one that can only be accessed and exited via helicopter, is that machines are your lifeline. Aside from your colleagues, machines are your best friends. If you treat them badly, they will treat you badly in return.
Machines are often very temperamental. Accidents and injuries that result from the improper handling or maintenance of energized or mechanical equipment can be reduced via proper training and regular checkups and maintenance.
Always use reliable lighting:
Another thing about living at sea is that it's often very dark – anytime a storm hits, anytime the sun goes down, anytime a light goes out inside. It can get dark quickly, and in an environment like an oil rig, where even the smallest feeling of claustrophobia can be exacerbated, darkness makes users more prone to accidents.
That's why reliable lighting is so important, especially in low or confined areas. Installing easy-to-see, easy-to-use lighting with customized safety signage helps everyone do their jobs better and warns them of potential hazards.
Keep work surfaces slip-proof:
This is an especially big challenge, considering that you're surrounded by nothing but water. Still, keeping work surfaces dry and slip-proof is not only manageable, but actually very easy.
Barring a storm or rain, there's no reason why work surfaces should be wet during daily operations. Wiping down the rig isn't rocket science, but it is boring, and workers will often neglect the job if they're given a chance to. Sturdy, waterproof boots will only go so far if the surfaces you're walking on are disasters waiting to happen.
Have enough repair and safety tool boxes everywhere:
There's no such thing as too many repair boxes, safety boxes, and first aid boxes around a rig. All industrial sites need them, but for obvious reasons, sea rigs need them most of all. Electrical parts, handling aids, plumbing, hand tools, power tools, welding gear — whatever is in short supply, get more of it. You're working on a multibillion dollar platform, after all – requisitioning more than what you need is a smart thing to do.
Have an emergency response plan (and drill it into your heart):
Perhaps the most obvious and the most overlooked of these 5 safety procedures, a smart, strategic emergency response plan isn't as simple as drawing one up and never practicing it. You should develop a plan based on the workflow on the rig, which will differ depending on the group, the rig, and even the weather.
